The Best Beaches in Corfu You Can Only Reach by Car

Corfu has no shortage of beautiful beaches – but the ones that stay with you long after you leave are rarely the ones the tour buses stop at. The island’s most spectacular stretches of coastline are tucked away down unmarked tracks, hidden beneath cliffs, or nestled at the end of roads that no shuttle service would dare attempt.

Stretching along the edge of the Korission Lagoon in the south of the island, Halikounas is one of Corfu’s longest and most unspoiled beaches. Backed by sand dunes and lapped by open sea on one side and a serene lagoon on the other, it’s a favourite with windsurfers and kite surfers – and almost completely unknown to package tourists. Keep your eyes on the lagoon side: flamingos are regularly spotted wading in the shallows.

There is no public transport here. The access road is narrow and unpaved in parts. But arrive on a weekday morning in July and you may have kilometres of golden sand almost entirely to yourself.

Best for: Nature lovers, windsurfers, birdwatchers, anyone seeking solitude.

Just north of Halikounas, Issos is another southern gem that rewards those willing to navigate the back roads. Wide, sandy and fringed by dunes, it has a wild, undeveloped feel that’s increasingly rare on a busy Ionian island. The shallow, warm water makes it particularly good for families. That said, it does get busy in July and August – arrive early to make the most of it.

Best for: Families, relaxed beach days.

Arguably the most photographed beach on the island, Porto Timoni is a breathtaking double bay on the northwest coast, accessible either by boat or by parking in the hilltop village of Afionas and hiking down a scenic but steep 20-minute trail.

Without a car, getting to Afionas is a logistical challenge. With one, you can be there in under an hour from almost anywhere on the island – and the view of the twin coves from the clifftop path alone is worth the journey.

Note: There are no facilities at Porto Timoni – bring water, food and sunscreen.

Best for: Hikers, snorkellers, photographers, couples.

Tucked between the Erimitis nature reserve and the village of Kassiopi on the northeast coast, Avlaki is a long, peaceful pebble beach with crystal-clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s far enough off the main tourist circuit to feel genuinely local, yet well-equipped enough for a full day out – with a couple of excellent tavernas serving local food right on the waterfront.

Best for: Long lazy lunches, snorkelling, escaping the crowds.

South of Avlaki lies the Erimitis nature reserve, a protected stretch of coastline that hides several completely undeveloped pebble coves – Arias, Tzoufka, Akoli, and Vrachili. Park at the southern end of Avlaki beach and follow the hiking trail into the reserve.

These coves have no sunbeds, no bars and no crowds. Just crystal-clear water, wild vegetation and the kind of silence that’s hard to find anywhere on a Greek island in August.

Best for: Adventure seekers, nature lovers, wild swimming.

Peroulades on the northwest tip of the island is home to Loggas Beach – a narrow strip of sand at the base of dramatic clay cliffs, famous across the world for its extraordinary sunsets. The clifftop bars are accessible enough, but reaching the area without a car involves a long bus ride followed by a walk that most visitors aren’t prepared for.

Drive up in the late afternoon, catch the sunset from the clifftop, and drive back at your leisure. It’s one of those Corfu experiences that simply can’t be replicated on an organised tour.

Best for: Sunset chasers, couples, photographers.

The slopes of Mount Pantokrator hide some of the island’s least-visited coastline. A car – ideally something with decent ground clearance – opens up a network of quiet tracks leading to small pebble coves with no names on the map and no one else on them.

If you’re the type of traveller who considers an empty beach a luxury, this is where you’ll find it.

Best for: Explorers, off-the-beaten-track travellers.
